What the word means
Merriam-Webster defines contemporary as "marked by characteristics of the present period." It gives "modern" and "current" as synonyms in that sense. So a contemporary rug is one whose design belongs to the present period, not one that follows a fixed list of patterns or colors.
A word that changed
Merriam-Webster says that in everyday use the word generally means simply "modern" or "new". It says that before the 20th century it referred only to things from the same era as certain other things.
Why there is no checklist
The present keeps moving, and the style moves with it. No source we use sets a list of colors, patterns, or materials that make a rug contemporary, so we do not publish one.
Style is separate from construction
How a rug looks and how it is made are two questions. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) says rugs can be knotted, woven, or hooked. A design that reads as contemporary can be made in more than one of these ways. Our construction guides explain each one.
Style is separate from fiber
CCI says modern carpets and rugs are usually constructed from synthetic fibres, while heirlooms are fashioned of natural fibres. That describes materials, not what makes a design contemporary. Our fiber guides cover wool, synthetics, and plant fibers.

FAQ
General information only. Keep walking paths clear. The CDC's home fall prevention checklist for older adults says to remove throw rugs, or use double-sided tape or a non-slip backing so the rugs won't slip. Follow the maker's label and instructions for any rug, rug pad, tape, or cleaning product. If someone falls and is hurt, get medical help. In an emergency, call 911.
