What we do

We publish general guides about rugs: style, sizes and placement, rugs by room, how rugs are made, fibers, labels, rug pads, cleaning, stains, carpet beetles, flammability standards, and new rug smell. The guides are for anyone reading a rug label or deciding what to measure. They are explainers, not reviews.

How we research a guide

We start with the question a reader asks. Then we look for an agency, a federal rule, a conservation institute, a museum, or a university extension service that answers it. We read the source and save a copy of the page on the day we check it. Quotes are word for word from that copy, and where we paraphrase, we name the source. If we cannot find a neutral source for a point, we say so on the page and leave the gap open.

The sources we use

Federal sources include the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the eCFR, the Federal Trade Commission, EPA, the CDC, the National Institute on Aging, and the USDA National Agricultural Library. Care sources include the Canadian Conservation Institute, The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum, and the Arizona State Museum. Extension sources include the University of California Statewide IPM Program and the extension services of the University of Maryland, the University of Florida, Washington State University, and Penn State. Reference sources include the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Merriam-Webster, Cooper Hewitt, Encyclopaedia Iranica, and the New Georgia Encyclopedia. Each is linked on the page that uses it. None of them endorses this site or approves any product.

How we keep guides current

Each guide lists the sources it relies on. If a source changes, or a reader sends a correction by mail, we may check the page against the source again and update it. We do not promise a schedule or a reply. Plain definitions and measuring tips that no source states are our own, and we write them as ours.

What we do not do

Contemporary Rugs is the name of this site, not a claim about any rug. We do not sell rugs. We do not publish prices, deals, reviews, ratings, rankings, or product picks. We do not claim to have tested products. We do not publish size charts or washing settings. Our cleaning guides report what named sources say and send you to the maker's instructions. We give no medical advice, and we do not recommend pest control products. We do not accept payment to recommend a retailer, brand, or product.

How the site is paid for

Some links on this site may be affiliate links, and if you buy through one, we may earn a commission. Commissions do not change our guidance. Our Affiliate Disclosure explains this and says whether the site is in any affiliate program.
