We give no size chart for bedroom rugs. Measure the bed, the floor you step onto, and the path to the door and bathroom, then compare those numbers with the maker's listed dimensions. Keep that path clear and lit, as the CDC's fall checklist for older adults says.
Why is there no bed size chart?
Makers set the sizes they sell, and we have no neutral source for a standard list of rug sizes by bed. A chart would be our invention, so we do not publish one. Our rug sizes guide explains what to measure in any room.
What should you measure around a bed?
Measure these before you look at rug sizes:
- the length and width of the bed frame, and where its legs sit;
- the floor beside the bed where you step down;
- side tables and a dresser, and the space their drawers need;
- the closet and room doors, and how far they swing;
- the path from the bed to the door and to the bathroom.
Then compare those numbers with the dimensions the maker lists for each rug.
Should the rug go under the bed?
We set no rule. CCI says: "When possible, avoid putting heavy pieces of furniture directly onto a carpet or rug." It says to reposition furniture from time to time so it does not leave permanent dents, and it says castor cups under furniture feet help spread the weight.
A rug that runs under the bed carries the bed's weight on its legs. A rug beside the bed carries none, but its edge sits where you step down. Either way, check the edges with the path in mind.
How do you keep the night path clear?
The CDC checklist for older adults asks if the way from your bed to the bathroom is dark. Its answer: "Put in a nightlight so you can see where you're walking." It also says: "Place a lamp close to the bed where it's easy to reach."
NIA says to "Put night lights and light switches close to your bed." If a rug or runner sits in that path, the CDC's throw rug advice in our safety line below applies.
Does sunlight matter in a bedroom?
CCI says light, both sunlight and artificial light, can dry out fibres and make colours fade. It says to keep a rug out of direct sunlight, or keep nearby windows covered when possible. CCI also says to rotate rugs from time to time so they wear more evenly.
Does rug size change the federal rules?
It changes which flammability standard applies. The CPSC says small carpets and rugs have no dimension greater than 6 feet and an area of no more than 24 square feet, and come under 16 CFR Part 1631. It says carpets and rugs with one dimension greater than 6 feet and a surface area greater than 24 square feet come under 16 CFR Part 1630. Our flammability guide explains both. We make no fire claims for any rug.
What about carpet beetles under the bed?
UC IPM says to check carpet under heavy furniture and at its edges for carpet beetle larvae. The University of Maryland Extension lists spots under large pieces of furniture among the places larvae are found. Vacuum under and around the bed when you vacuum the rug. Our carpet beetles guide has the signs.
Does the fiber matter in a bedroom?
We have no neutral source that ranks fibers for a bedroom, so we do not. Read the fiber content label, and see our fibers and labels guides for what each name means.

FAQ
General information only. Keep walking paths clear. The CDC's home fall prevention checklist for older adults says to remove throw rugs, or use double-sided tape or a non-slip backing so the rugs won't slip. Follow the maker's label and instructions for any rug, rug pad, tape, or cleaning product. If someone falls and is hurt, get medical help. In an emergency, call 911.
